Prosodic marking and predictability in lexical self-repair

چکیده

This paper reports on an investigation of lexical selfrepair in Dutch spontaneous dialogue. Lexical selfrepairs, in which one word is rejected for another, can be produced with or without notable ̳prosodic marking‘ of the second word. It remains unclear what motivates speakers‘ choices, but previous research has shown that the semantic distance between the two words is relevant. This study assesses the relevance of the words‘ predictability. Prosodic marking judgements are modelled using an established semantic classification and a range of probabilistic variables, including both frequencybased and cloze-based measures. Results suggest that probabilistic measures add little predictive power to the semantic classification, although informative data trends can be observed.

Prosodic marking, pitch and intensity in spontaneous phonological self-repair in Dutch

We report on a phonetic analysis of instances of spontaneous phonological error repair sampled from Dutch spontaneous speech. We investigate whether phonological error repairs can be ‘prosodically marked’ and what factors constrain repair prosody. Previous studies of ‘prosodic marking’ in self-repair have suggested that while lexical error repairs are regularly realized with marked prosody, pho...

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

Prosodic marking of self-repairs

Slip studies predominantly focus on either structural or semantic properties of the errors. Since most analyses have been based on pen-and-paper collections, i.e., on-line notes, it is quite understandable that suprasegmental of errors have remained a neglected area. The present prosodic analysis is based on acoustical measurements of 307 self-repairs. Each repair has been measured with the Pra...

The acquisition of prosodic focus-marking in Central Swedish: Sorting out lexical and post-lexical tones

In many languages prosody is used for marking focus, but the way this is done varies from one language to the next. Previous work on the acquisition of prosodic focus marking has been centred on English, German and Dutch, thus little is known about how prosodic focus is acquired outside West-Germanic varieties. We present a study of prosodic focus marking in Central Swedish, showing how the foc...

The use of phrase-level prosodic information in lexical segmentation: evidence from word-spotting experiments in Korean.

This study investigated the role of phrase-level prosodic boundary information in word segmentation in Korean with two word-spotting experiments. In experiment 1, it was found that intonational cues alone helped listeners with lexical segmentation. Listeners paid more attention to local intonational cues (...H#L...) across the prosodic boundary than the intonational information within a prosodi...
